Teaching New Truth

The Creative Word: Canon as a Model for Biblical Education, Second Ed.,
Walter Brueggemann, Fortress Press, 2015, page 95

Finally, Brueggemann addresses how we can teach new truth.

The task of the second part of the canon is to bring the passion of G-d to speech - to speak in such ways of passion that the words will not be co-opted. To educate in this way is a heavy task. For the prophetic canon and all "new truth" from G-d is never disinterested. It is the voice of those who have given up on the old consensus, who know that G-d has promised much more than has been given. It is the conviction that more is to be given, if only the stranglehold of old truth can be broken. The old truth has ways to deal with traitors and blasphemers. The second part of the canon, however, believes that things are never so fully or unambiguously resolved. The prophets may be routinely eliminated, but the new truth will have its say.

Where do we stand and what do we teach? How can we present the new truth of the kingdom of G-d in a world whose consensus is uniformly against it? How do we, as believers, stand out from the crowd of minority groups pleading for their choices to be accepted, that G-d's new truth may be heard and recognised about the shouts of the crowd?
