The Five Books of Moses - The Schocken Bible: Volume 1
Now over fifteen years old, this fiercely literal translation
is worth its weight in gold. Revealing the thrust and nuances
of the underlying Hebrew text in a delightful English style,
this translation is warmly recommended for hearing the mood
and language devices that most translations are not only
incapable of showing, but have chosen to omit or obscure.
Like Friedman's work, the commentary has a tendency to be too
gullible with modern critical scholarship, so that it is
necessary to ignore many of the comments regarding the age and
provenance of the text. Nevertheless, this volume provides a
valuable and challenging introduction to the way the Hebrew
text works while requiring no Hebrew knowledge at all.
